Creation’s Rest, Baking Bread, Fermentation, and Coffee
On the Sabbath day, as the bread is set to rise, the vegetables ferment, and the coffee brews, let us contemplate the spiritual essence of these things, preparing our soul for spi(rich)ual psalmody from the Spirit.
Let the rising bread remind us of Him who is risen for our salvation. Let the salt of the brine, which draws forth the flavors of life and preserves the vegetables from decay, remind us that we are called to be the salt of the earth—summoning forth life’s beauty and giving glimpses of the everlasting.
And as the coffee brews, let us remember that those who are neither hot nor cold will be spat out of His mouth. Better to burn with love, or even to dwell in ignorance awaiting His light, than to be caught lukewarm in our faith—laboring in vain, like bread without yeast or brine without salt.
